IS DOVER STREET MARKET THE NEXT JEFFREY?

Posted by Leonard Steinberg on August 4th, 2013 The uber-chic London-based fashion emporium DOVER STREET MARKET is coming to a rather unexpected neighborhood, located at 160 Lexington Avenue  (@30th Street). The 20,000sf store, located in an exceptionally beautiful 1909-built bank building, mingles Comme de Garcons’ various lines with a range of international designer brands for women and men  is due to open in December 2013 and it could revolutionize this already fast-evolving neighborhood the way Jeffery changed the Meatpacking District. It is not the first time Kawakubo is stepping into uncharted territory in New York. She opened a boutique in SoHo in 1983, when it was still largely an industrial neighborhood, and was the first to spy the retail potential of Chelsea, where she moved the Comme des Garçons store in 1999. This area known to some as Kip’s Bay started getting more attention the minute the Gansevoort Hotel opened on Park Avenue South and will include Sarabeth’s, the new SLS Hotel, Huys  (the new Piet Boon designed condo), Christian de Portzamparc’s crystalline 400 Park Avenue South condo and offices, and much more. Like NOMAD, this neighborhood may be set for a great future and Dover Street Market will be the pioneering fashion retailer once more.
