CHELSEA'S WALKER TOWER AT 212 WEST 18th STREET COMES TO LIFE

The Verizon building known as Walker Tower, located at 212 West 18th Street, just west of Seventh Avenue between 17th and 18th Street is in the process of being converted to a high end condominium. 55 residences with exceptional views and superb 12ft+ ceiling heights will sit atop the Verizon switching stations that will occupy the lower 8 floors with a separate entrance on 17th Street.

The building is being designed by Centra Ruddy, the design firm responsible for neighborhood landmarks such as 141 Fifth Avenue and 1 Madison Park…..we have heard they will be tapping into the building’s Art Deco heritage for design inspiration. Chelsea is always a great setting for superb views, and because this is an existing structure, it towers above other buildings and sites that could never build as high. The developer, mostly known for smaller projects in Brooklyn, is adding 4 additional floors to create a trophy penthouse.

I feel this building could be very successful because of the views and ceiling heights: its biggest challenge will be that at a certain price point buyers may frown on being perched atop a switching station…..a Mandarin Oriental Hotel or a Park Hyatt is one thing, but….
